See those three pieces of 'walking stick'? That's what's left of my stick that I've had for several years and always take hiking with me. Mom tried to break a hole in the ice and it broke, then I tried to break a hole and broke the piece I had. We laid the pieces on the ground leading up to a fairy house for the stairs and we're going to find a new stick that's a little taller and stronger for me to use.

I've got a new toy. A GoPro camera. We've taken it with us hiking and climbing and now I've got dinner and symphony in HD super video. Very fun. My favorite part of any movie is me, of course.

While my Dad was climbing me and Mom hung out at the 'Backyard Boulders' behind Castle Rock. This pool was on top of a big boulder. Cool, huh?

I like to sit on the flat rock that's on the lower left part of the picture and wait for my Dad.

San Rafael Swell - Big Road Trip Saturday

I had a map laid out on the kitchen counter for a few days. Dad got the message and we followed my plan and my map. Here's the write-up;

San Rafael Swell (from Wikipedia) is a large geologic feature located in south-central Utah about 30 miles west of Green River, Utah. The swell is 75 miles by 40 miles, consists of a giant dome-shaped anticline of sandstone, shale, and limestone that was pushed up during the Paleocene Laramide Orogeny 60 - 40 million years ago. Since that time, infrequent but powerful flash floods have eroded the sedimentary rocks into numerous valleys, canyons, gorges, mesas and buttes.

The history shows evidence of Native American cultures, including the Fremont, Paiute, and Ute, and is common throughout the San Rafael Swell in the form of pictograph and petroglyph panels. From about 1776 to the mid -1850's the Old Spanish Trail trade route passed through the Swell. There are many native plants occurring that are nowhere else in the world.

Both the San Rafael River and Muddy Creek drain out of the high Wasatch Plateau and cut directly across the uplift of the Reef, which marks them as 'superimposed streams', pre-dating the time of the uplift. Part of the Swell has geographic features that resembles Mars. The Mars Society decided to set up the Mars Desert Research Station in the area as a Mars analog for such reasons.

That's the well-known Stoert's Ridge route on the skyline right of my Dad and Marshall. There's a write-up on www.mountainproject.com Big Cottonwood Canyon, Dead Snag, Dead Snag Direttissima.

If you want to try it (easy 5.8-) this hole I dug is five feet right of the knife blade crack that is the beginning of the climb. Just trying to help.

Now we're talking my language.

This does NOT count. I thought I spelled it correctly when I wrote 'Disney Dream Cruise' on my list - This was the Queen Mary! We spent the night and went on 3 ghost tours. We were the only people on the scariest tour besides the guide. It advised pregnant ladies and heart attack prone people and people who didn't like loud sounds to keep away. Perfect for us, I guess, neither of us are pregnant, though. We also went to the aquarium and toured a submarine in Long Beach, CA.

Craters of the Moon National Monument

Here we go, I'm prepared...you know that means I always have my flashlight with me.

It was 100 degrees...and this was a much longer hike than the Rangers would have you believe. The heat didn't bother me, I just put that in for my Mom.

They say this area was formed about 2,100 years ago from the Blue Dragon Flow. Lava flowed up to 18 miles from its source.

This reminds me of the picture of me and my Dad in the Dolomites when I was trying to tell him which was we should go. Poor old guy. I know the direction to a cave is down.

Paradise. It was a relief to be out of the heat. It was nice and cool in the caves.

All eyes, again.

This is the top of the highest cinder cone. It was really windy...like being in a furnace with a hot wind blowing on you.

Back to the truck. Poor old Dad had to turn around part way up...because we forgot to lock the truck...although, it was very hot and we hiked up 18 stories in a very short walk.

Thanks, Dad, this has been on my short list for over a year now. You are the Best!!

Hmm, next on my list it says, a cruise on the Disney Dream in the Bahamas.

Pre-show Pizza with good friends. I'm on guard from the cat, Pente, who dresses in clothes and is really friendly...I mean REALLY friendly... if you get my drift. I've got my feet off the floor so there are no surprises.

Dad told me about this place. Before I was born this is where my family went to dinner - they told me I 'd like it because of the caves and tunnels and they were right.

Boettcher Mansion on Lookout Mountain. We took the whole tour...really great. It reminded me of Scotty's Castle in Death Valley.

This is inside Casa Bonitas. This makes The Mayan seem small. I was all eyes. Dad took me on a great tour. We went in every little nook and cranny. The divers and Black Bart and the Sheriff were still there. My Dad said the food was still bad. I ordered the Little Amigo and my Dad got the Big Gringo.

Walt Disney World Animal Kingdom

I liked Animal Kingdom more than the Magical Kingdom.

I had to keep my strength up.

It was very crowded on a Saturday - but we saw some great stuff. The Nemo Show, the bug show in super-3D, the Safari to mention a few. For a souvenier I picked a Nemo stuffed toy.

It was just like being in the jungle. I'd like to go here again. It was rainy and the bird show was canceled and we had to run for cover. When we were waiting for the bus back to the hotel there was a downpour, lightening, wind and everybody huddled under the shelter and people were talking about hurricanes. I was afraid and it made me nervous - Mom wore ear plugs the whole day because it was really noisy.

This is one of the first spring-like days at Castle Rocks. I've got a stick, water, rocks, and sunshine (still some ice in the water, too). That about completes it for me. I hope you've got such a perfect day going for yourself.

The banks were nice and muddy. It's a good thing I wore my all purpose CROCS today and every day. Always be prepared. FYI - these have JIBITZ that light up with motion. Buzz-Lightyear and a flame. I don't like to draw attention to myself. :)

For our Saturday adventure yesterday my Dad and I headed to the IBEX climbing area in the Utah west desert near the Nevada border. Maybe not the best time of the year to go.
It was much worse than it looks in this picture. We never made it to the climbing area and we are really lucky that we didn't have to abandon the truck till spring. A real Saturday adventure!

This isn't the climbing area but it's still some rocks.

I had to put this in because the truck is getting more face time than me. This is Joe Miller's blog - not crazy man/boy truck blog.

Road Trip - Bryce Canyon

Two day road trip with Dad. A few weeks ago I started writing down the places I wanted to see in Bryce Canyon. Dad loves to explore, too, so he was happy to tag along. Boston's Greatest Hits was the soundtrack for this trip.

I was looking everywhere. The rocks, caves, hikes, and colors, made me so happy. I have 4 apps on my ipad about Bryce Canyon that I've been studying so almost everything I saw was familiar.

Like being in the heart of the sun.

Can you believe this amazing planet? What's next? So much to see. So little time.

I'm not the only dare-devil in the family. Check me out.

Bridges, paths, and very few other people. Me and Dad spent one night at Ruby's Inn in Bryce Canyon. Swimming, ate dinner, and took in the exotic sights.

My brother told me about these lights. My Dad took me to see them several nights ago and they were so great that he promised to take me to see them every night till Christmas...and he has!

There's a sign out front that says to tune your radio to fm99. There are 3 beautiful Christmas songs - two of which I have on this blog and the third I have on a CD - nothing corny. The lights move in tine with the music. I could sit all night and look and listen.

Thanks Dad - you never disappoint.

Death Valley National Park

My Dad took me on the best road trip. I've been interested in Death Valley and Scotty's Castle. I've studied maps, google-searched images and videos. I wrote a list of the places I wanted to visit there and I have 3 apps on my ipad showing tours and google-earth overhead visions.

We flew into Las Vegas and rented a car and headed out to Death Valley. This is the outside of Scotty's Castle. Scotty is buried on the ranch along side his dog, Windy.

My favorite part was exploring the tunnel system under the Castle that was used to cool it. They used solar power and had fenced in the entire 45-mile perimeter of the Castle grounds.

Of course I brought my flashlight and it came in handy checking out these things....

Headed home. Thanks Dad. You are the BEST! Now, for my next adventure....

Need Help Identifying Object That Was Flying

We can't figure out what this is. This is the close-up and the one below is the original. This is in Almo, Idaho. It showed up in several pictures from several angles. It moved with another one from the direction of the moon. From the moon they looked like white rods. The other one disappeared. You couldn't see them with your eyes - just in the pictures.

Just doing my job here; Observing. My Dad is near the top of Cima Ovest (biggest block on the right) via the guide route. Tiny speck of orange if you have great eyes.
I had thought the luckiest sheep on the planet were in Almo, Idaho....but these sheep may beat them out of top spot. The bells they wore sounded so pretty and I could have watched the 2 sheep dogs do their work all day. Amazing.

This is the top of the pass. Me and Mom just had lunch in the hut and we are watching and waiting for Dad to do a climb.
This is the view to the south. The hill in the middle is where the paragliders take off and there were several out today because the weather was beautiful.

Sassalungo, Cortina - Day 3 (part 2 of 2)

OK - me and my favorite guy in the whole world. You can tell by his cheesy grin and funny hat that he just completed a great climb - The Thumb on Funffingerspitzen, 9 pitches up, 6 rappels down - solo. Me and Mom watched him and had some apple strudel and hot chocolate at the hut and rode the chairlifts down together.
This is the funny ride up to the pass and the Toni-Demetz Hut. They had to stop the lift for me to get in because it was a bit tricky.
This is a fancy car gathering of Lamborgini's (I think). It was a parade of one amazing car after another. In the background is a climb my Dad did and my brother, Marshall flew by him in a paraglider and they were so close they could talk to each other. We have the DVD and it is really awesome.

Arrived safe and sound and it is a beautiful day in the Italian Alps.

The spectacular knife-edged ridge in the background got hung-up in my Dad's head and he would climb it a few days later - an Emilio Comici Route - as a tribute to Emilio it was soloed.

I found a Dolomite version of Dora's friend - Diego. We didn't buy it but now I have this picture to remember him by.

You might not realize this but I'm being very brave in spite of how calm I appear looking at maps and postcards with my Dad. Just out of the picture on my right is a whole wall of cuckoo clocks. Thank you very much.

Brandon and I both love maps. You could press a button and it would light up on the map where it was. We went to the 3D movie, "Sea-Rex". Me and my Mom, and Brandon and his Mom. We had the big 3D glasses on and it was great. The dinosaurs came right out of the screen in front of your face.

This is me and my friend, Brandon at the Ivory Ridge swimming pool. We had so much fun. Brandon is awesome. We both miss Mr.Pead and can't wait to see him when school starts. That's mainly what we talked about...besides singing and dancing. Brandon wanted me to buy an Abba CD but we couldn't find one. I'll keep looking. We plan to go to Mama Mia when the broadway show comes to Salt Lake.

We were looking for places to climb tomorrow and I told my Dad I wanted to climb. So, I put shoes on and the chalkbag on and went off to solo. My shoe fell off before I got very far...otherwise it would have been awesome.

This is one of the new friends I made at the drag races in Magna last night. Everyone was so nice to me. I got to see all the cars and touch them. They gave me cool stickers. It was so loud on the bridge above where the cars take off that it shook your whole body. Of course, I had my ears covered the entire night - hard to do while still holding Dora. It was 'muscle car' night.
